Well… Midsummer came, the Holly King won, and now the days grow shorter. The Oak King slumbers, readying himself, for his time will come again. The wheel turns and now Lammas comes. Traditionally, the first harvest and fresh bread from a new crop of wheat. Some would argue that the wheat we see is not new, that the bread was made from things harvested much earlier, and that with our industrial style agriculture, we are disconnected from the symbolism of being able to make fresh bread with fresh supplies and instead we get what we can from our local grocery store. They would argue that even with bread machines, the mixes are pre done with older ingredients. Here’s how I see it, it is symbolic. Sure, it would be great to be able to walk out to the field and get things fresh, but that’s just not how it works any more, at least for most of us. It’s about celebrating that we can have a harvest and there is bounty enough to make bread… Even if we buy it in a bag from the store. So rejoice and be happy.
What are you harvesting in your life right now? What seeds did you plant for yourself? I hope your harvest is abundant, no matter what it may be.
