Celebrate Yule with Us!
Many of the Christmas traditions we know today have their roots in ancient Norse beliefs and customs. The word Yuletide—now synonymous with Christmas—originates from the Norse pagan winter festival of Yule, with tide meaning a “period of time.” For centuries, Yule was celebrated by the ancient Germanic peoples, including the Vikings, and similar winter festivals were also observed by the Celts.
If we look closely, many modern Christmas elements—like the decorated evergreen tree, mistletoe, festive wreaths, and even the concept of elves—trace back to these Northern European traditions. According to Viking lore, Odin, the great god and father of other deities, would ride across the night sky during Yule and visit homes. Viking children would place their shoes near the hearth on the eve of the winter solstice, filled with hay and sugar for Sleipnir, Odin’s eight-legged horse. In return, Odin would leave gifts behind for the children—a precursor to some of our own holiday gift-giving customs.
Join us for a magical Yule celebration as we explore and honor the traditions of the Germanic pre-Christian peoples. Discover the rich history of this festive season and experience the timeless rituals that continue to inspire holiday joy.
